Sooke School District (SD62)

The Sooke School District (SD 62) currently serves approximately 14,000 students in kindergarten to grade 12 throughout the communities of Langford, Colwood, Metchosin, Highlands, Sooke, and the Juan de Fuca region of the Capital Regional District (including East Sooke, Otter Point, Shirley, Jordan River, and Port Renfrew).

With 20 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, 3 traditional secondary schools, 1 alternative secondary school, and 1 specialty academy focused secondary school, the Sooke School District is the largest employer in the Western Communities with over 2,400 staff. Staffing is comprised of two union locals – the Sooke Teacher's Association (STA), and the support staff under CUPE 459 as well as exempt and excluded staff (including school principals and vice principals). In addition to being the largest employer in the area, the Sooke School District is responsible for an annual operating budget of over $240 million per year (2026/27 budget is $246 million), and is in the design phase of a $219 million capital project to build a new 2,000 seat secondary school (estimated to open September 2030).

Supporting a number of growing communities, the Sooke School District is one of few districts across the province that is continuing to see enrollment growth, but that growth has slowed significantly compared to prior years (down to about 1.7% per year from 4.5% per year). Additionally, we are one of the most complex and diverse districts across the province covering a large geographical area, rapidly densifying urban centers, mixed rural/urban communities, and fully rural areas with limited services.
